WhatCar’s Car of the Year Award goes to a battery powered electric vehicle
A Korean battery powered Kia e-Niro electric car has won WhatCar’s Car of the Year Award – and it is the first time the reward has been given to this type of vehicle.
A representative from WhatCar has expressed positive comments towards Kia e-Niro’s careful balance between sensible pricing and performance.
Kia’s e-Niro is a completely electric vehicle, able to travel 253 miles – it has overcome 23 winners from other categories, claiming the best overall title of “Car of the Year”.
E-Niro’s award at the 42nd WhatCar’s awards ceremony signifies that electric vehicles have a growing potential to surpass diesel and petrol rivals at a higher rate of consistency in the very near future.
“Most of the leading manufacturers have plans for new EVs, and the fact that the Kia e-Niro was able to beat all its petrol and diesel rivals to win the 2019 WhatCar Car of the Year Award shows how far this technology has developed.”
The e-Niro also received a five-star rating in WhatCar’s review. The review says the car “threatens to rewrite the rulebook and make electric motoring a realistic proposition for the masses”.
Other noteworthy recognitions by WhatCar went to Kia and Hyundai for their progression with fuel cell technology. Hyundai’s Kona Electric was awarded the Technology Reward by WhatCar.
Hyundai’s Kona Electric was almost universally seen as “bringing real-world usability, smart looks and a fun driving experience to mainstream use.”
