Details have been announced of the Hyundai Kona Electric – available early 2019

Hyundai have announced details of the Hyundai Kona Electric and its exciting for those in the market for a lower cost SUV than the Jaguar I-Pace and the Tesla range.

4 models are going to be available as below (prices including deduction of Government plug-in car grant):

  • SE 39kWh – from £24,995
  • Premium 39 kWh – from £26,370
  • Premium 64 kWh – from £29,495
  • Premium SE 64 kWh – from £31,795

The lower capacity battery will be likely to achieve 186 miles of range on a single charge, making it a very competitive model for the price.  Its powertrain is stated to produce 136PS and 395Nm of torque allowing it to accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds with a top speed of 96mph.

The upgrade to the 64kWh battery pack significantly boosts the car’s range to up to 300 miles on a single charge and gives increased acceleration of 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds.

There is a range of standard safety features including Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Recognition (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW) Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Smart Cruise Control (ASCC) and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO Hyundai Motor UK said “KONA Electric has already attracted a phenomenal level of interest from customers across the globe and we are expecting demand to be high with limited vehicle availability.

“Customers that want to be one of the first to own a KONA Electric will be able to place an order from August 2. Test drives will be facilitated through a dealer roadshow in due course.

“With the 64kWh offering a potential 300 mile range, KONA Electric will not only appeal to customers who are already familiar with battery electric technology but perhaps more importantly, will enable some customers to take the step into electric vehicles by not only removing range anxiety but by doing so with a stylish, technically advanced and affordable package.”

Our view is that this model will offer a great additional option for those wanting to switch to electric cars and at an affordable price.  It fills a gap in the current range of models available across all manufacturers and we are sure it will be successful.
